Why Indonesia yacht charter?

This is a country that has the most islands in the world if we exclude all the Scandinavian and northern countries where due to glacial history there are thousands and thousands of miniature ones.

Aerial-shot-of-the-Wayag-Islands-Raja-Ampat-West-Papua-Indonesia

Indonesia archipelago has more than 17.500 Islands as diverse as anywhere on the planet. It is also a land of many cultures, unseen species, plants, histories, traditional yachts, and the whole region is almost entirely untouched by human hands.

Covering just 1% of the Earth’s land, Indonesia’s rainforests are home to a massive 10% of the planet’s plant species, 12% of mammal species and 17% of all known bird species. She is also home to 75% of all known coral species, 40% of the world’s reef fish species and six of the world’s seven sea turtle species.

There are no big hotels In Indonesia and there are only a few smaller resorts on the main islands. There are regulations in force to keep this place as pristine as it is, so only a handful of yachts are allowed to charter in the area. So if you want untouched nature and hardly another yacht to be seen this is a destination that can provide this.

Indonesia

Breathtaking anchorages, diving with the most vibrant of underwater life, exploring the jungle with numerous birds and animal species that only exist there and hiking to the tops of mysterious peaks are just cherries on the top for a complete vacation experience of this destination.

In Indonesia not only islands and animals are unique, but also the yachts used to explore these stunning Islands are different from anywhere else. While most of the yachts are similar elsewhere, here you can rent a unique Phinisi style luxury yacht traditional design and built-in Indonesia in the traditional way.

No matter which destination or route you choose – Indonesia’s snorkeling is some of the best in the world.

Unfortunately a selection of crewed luxury charter yachts available there is not as huge, which does not mean that luxury yachts do not exist here. Traditional vessels

The sea has always played a large role in Indonesia and all migrations, communications, and commerce were done on water and Indonesians are one of the most sophisticated maritime people in the world.

The traditional two-masted vessel is called Phinisi and expresses the spirit of Indonesian culture and belongs to UNESCO’s List of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanities. In the past, they were mostly used for transportation of goods, but now (retaining unique design since the 1600s) are also used for private cruises and unique yacht charter holidays. Even the most modern yachts have a great mixture of ancient, charming traditions, combined with modern design and technology, but are more than just sailing vessels.

Where to cruise in Indonesia?

Over 17.000 islands to explore in Indonesia

As you have already read above, Indonesia is really huge and is as long as the distance from New York to San Francisco or the distance from Ireland to Turkey.

We can divide Indonesia charter places into three main areas and regarding the tropical climate this has a huge role in where and when it is possible or better say appropriate to cruise, but more about that later.

Cruising area Indonesia

Cruising areas in Indonesia

Panoramic-View-of-Wayag-Raja-Ampat.-West-Papua-Indonesia

Raja Ampat area in the northeast with nearby islands rounded to the whole by Sulawesi island. In the south, there is Komodo National Park with Bali, Sumbawa and other popular islands. Last but not least is in the northwest area with Anambas Islands.

Cruising in Indonesia offers a wide variety of areas and island groups. Cruises around the Komodo Islands from Flores are the most popular ones and offer a possibility to explore Indonesia from a different point of view.

Lots of people and groups would unquestionably say that Raja Ampat is the flagship of private charters in Indonesia where islands are the most unspoiled and offering the most to see below and above the surface.

No matter what, the possibilities are really huge and here we will help you find and organize the most appropriate route to suit your group and your wishes the best.

Top 6 islands in Indonesia

With more than 17.500 islands to explore, choosing the best/top islands is really difficult, especially because they are all so different from each other and each offers something different and different scenery.

Anyway below we called attention to some of the most fascinating islands, archipelagos, and national parks and beautiful spots you shouldn’t miss in Indonesia.

View-to-Piaynemo-islands-from-the-viewpoint-Raja-Ampat-Indonesia

1. Raja Ampat

The sparsely populated area consists of more than 1500 islands and is one of the most exceptional environments and most isolated island chains on the planet. The name in translation mentions 4 major islands of Misool, Batanta, Waigeo, and Salawati.

The main features of this environment are pristine unnotched sandy beaches, secret lagoons, mysterious caves, steep jungle-covered islands, and sheer limestone mushroom-shaped cliffs plunging into aqua seas.

The whole area archipelago combines the largest number of freshwater bird species in the region and under the water, it is recognized as the world’s most bio-diverse marine ecosystem with thousands of species of fish, coral, sea turtle, and mythical Manta.

We must not forget about cultural heritage, as it is really interesting, with prehistoric cave paintings, cave bunkers and also some wreckage from the recent history of World War II.

Once again we need to point out that the whole area is one of the most untouched destinations in the country and there are not many touristy attractions and unbearable crowds.

Pulau-Padar-island

2. Komodo National Park

It is one of the most popular places in Indonesia and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The national park consists of 29 islands, where three are larger ones, Komodo, Padar, and Rinca.

Most of the Islands are uninhabited and the whole area is one of the biggest natural treasures in the world. The entire park has repeatedly made it on the lists for the best diving areas, where warm tropical waters are one of the most species-rich underwater environments on earth, and where walls and underwater gardens are a paradise for all divers.

Islands in the park are also home to the native prehistoric creature Komodo dragons which are the largest reptiles on earth.

All the islands in this area are relatively close together so the cruising here is the easiest, but we have to point out that they still offer very different landscapes.

At one end you can see overgrown mangroves shores, or precipitous mountainous rocks while at the other end, green grassy hills and deep bays.

Pura-Ulun-Danu-Bratan-a-water-temple-on-Bali-Indonesia

3. Bali

It is certainly the most popular tourist destination in the whole country and you can meet most tourists here. However, the situation is not critical and only a few places on the earth can say that they have remained true to their culture with such a large inflow of tourism as Bali remained.

Most of you saw Bali many times on television and it really represents nature, peace, and spirituality in one place. We should not forget about the typical and world-famous beaches.

Here anyone can find something for themselves. Kuta’s nightlife, shopping in trendy Seminyak, surfing perfect waves, or you can explore the hinterland and traditional rice-making, or grandiose figures of an active volcano, the tropical valleys among mysterious waterfalls, or visit one of the 10.000 monuments or temples on the islands.

Maluku-islands

4. The Maluku Islands

The Maluku Islands were known as the Spice Islands because of the nutmeg, mace, and cloves that were exclusively found there. This means that the islands have a colonial history and many European countries have fought for the territory, which can also be seen in the many crumbling fortresses standing in the area.

Charismatic Kota Ambon is one of the largest townships in eastern Indonesia, and where people can explore the ancient forts and museum, housing a large collection of colonial artifacts.

5. Flores Island

As Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world it is not surprising that there are roughly around 2 million people on this island. There is Lelimutu National Park there and the most famous tourist attraction is little more than 1600 meters high volcano where three colored lakes that are changing colors due to oxidation and acidic water from green to black and red to blue.

The scenery here is famous after pink sands, ancient stone-age structures, caves, lakes and waterfalls and occasional visits of whale sharks.

6. Kalimantan

Kalimantan is the Indonesian piece of the island of Borneo. It comprises two-thirds of the island’s area. Only the rare islands can offer such wildlife and unique adventures as Borneo Island. Huge rainforests housing orangutans, exotic birds, Sumatran rhinos, pygmy elephants, and a bunch of other creatures.

There is the longest river Kapuas in the whole country offering abundant activities, from diving, rafting, caving, trekking and other adventures and wildlife options.

It is said that the legend of the mermaid has begun in Indonesia and this is not a big surprise. The offer of beaches is huge and in the end, each list depends on the individual’s taste. However, you can see below the most popular and famous beaches in Indonesia that visitors most want to visit. The fact is that if you want bays and beaches just for yourself, these are not the priority points of your visit. On the yacht charter, you have many other possibilities to explore the islands that cannot be visited otherwise.

1. Bingin Beach, Bali

Bingin Beach is located in the South of Bali and it is only 30 minutes from Denpasar Airport and less than 10 minutes to Uluwatu Temple, one of the most remarkable tourist destinations of Bali Island. It is a stunning beach with exceptional views over the Indian Ocean and the great waves that make it one of the most demanded surfing points by surfers in Bali and the world.

2. Pink Beach, Komodo

It really does have pink sand, and wonderful snorkeling is possible in clear warm turquoise waters. It is one of the seven pink beaches on the planet, and one of the many amazing attributes. This color is achieved because of tiny microscopic animals that produce a red pigment on the coral reefs.

3. Kuta Beach, Bali

This place was once a lonely little village where people surfed, but now it is getting more and more popular and if you want a party, lots of big bars, shops, surfers and tourists then it is the place for you. It has a mesmerizing view and a magnificent sunrise which is eye candy for nature lovers.

4. Tanjung Gelam, Karimunjawa

Again, if you are a sunset lover, then you need to see this very awesome beach. This large beach contains clear white sand and of course one of the most beautiful sunsets in Indonesia. The water is also appropriately deep compared to a lot of beaches on the island.

There is a diversity of small family-owned restaurants and cafés, massage, water sports, and a few chilled spots to string up a hammock and chill.

5. Atuh Beach, Nusa Penida

Atuh Beach is one of the most epic beaches in Bali. The good thing is that it is a little harder to reach, which means that it really isn’t crowded and definitely worth a visit. You can swim and enjoy the fresh blue sea water and white sand, seeing unique stone landscapes. Just be careful to not be there once it is low tide because the entire beach will be just exposed rocks, without blue turquoise water.

Palm-trees-over-stunning-lagoon-and-white-beach

6. Ngurtafur Beach, Warbal Island, Maluku

One of the most scenic beaches especially during the low tide on a sunny day. The contrast between the white sand and the turquoise water is just out of the world. A hundred square meters and possible walking to the neighboring island is amazing, but yes please bring the strongest sunscreen you have with you.

There are few similar sand beaches in Indonesia and if you want to experience something similar in Raja Ampat area there is a smaller Pasir Timbul beach there.

Possible activities while cruising in Indonesia

Indonesia is a natural gem and there are really so many options besides the cruise you can do that it is impossible for all of the thousands of islands to write what you can do. Below, we will generally write what is possible and recommend also some more concrete suggestions. Remember that after receiving your wishes, we will create a route where the possible activities will be selected and tailored according to the structure of your group.

1. Above & below the water

Scuba-diving

Diving

Indonesia is located within the coral triangle, an area offering pristine world-class dive sites, and lucky you, we know them all! We strive to assure that each of your dives brings something special to remember. We can help you with our local diving teams or also a lot of vessels already have them on board and they tailor each trip according to your experience level and then matches it to your wish list.

Snorkeling:

The entire Indonesian archipelago offers some superb snorkeling opportunities. Colorful, shallow reefs are teeming with an abundance of marine life. Glimpse into the amazing underwater world by slowly gliding over their habitat so as not to disturb the life below. Snorkeling guides will guide you to the best and safest places.

You don’t need to be a scuba diver to enjoy the underwater world of the Raja Ampat islands for example. Some of the best sea life can be seen right at the docks, in less than ten feet of water.

Kayaking:

All the vessels are having kayaks and stand up paddleboards so you have the opportunity to explore the islands and parks on your own. It could be that you find yourself paddling next to majestic mantas, or perhaps you are even overtaken by a pod of spinner dolphins. With a little more luck, you may see a dugong slowly surfacing to see what is going on. Komodo and Alor Archipelagos are great to be explored with kayaks, just be aware that currents may be extremely strong, so listen to the crew carefully.

2. Treks & land excursions

Pearl-oysters

Visit a pearl farm

A very interesting event, especially for the female part of the population in the groups, is a visit of a pearl farm on the western coast of Waigeo. Here you can see how extremely delicate and time-consuming this craftsmanship is before oysters, that only grow in the most nutrient-rich waters, in the heart of the South Seas do their job and present their wonderful shiny product.

Hike Piaynemo for a 5-Star View in Raja Ampat:

Indonesia is filled with beautiful scenery but is more picturesque than the view from the top of Piaynemo Island in Raja Ampat. Pulling up to the small dock on the island, there is a set of stairs heading straight up into the forest.

These 318 steps can be challenging during the humid heat, but the view from the top is worth every single one. From the peak, you can see an iconic karst island seascape, small islands surrounded by a dozen shades of brilliant turquoise. You can also buy there a fresh coconut juice which comes in very handy.

Explore caves and rock art galleries:

Giant Tomolol cave is one great example of what Misool Island‘s karst landscape can do. The cave entrance is protected by a shrine, but the cave can still be explored via the river that flows through the cave. We can help you organize tours using inflatable rings and boats. Don’t forget to check the rock art galleries (estimated at around five thousand years old) that decorate island overhangs and cave walls nearby. From recent history, you can also see limestone cliff burial sites that still contain the skeletal remains of other ancient island residents.

Jungle trekking and wildlife observation:

The villages of Waifoi and Warimak on Waigeo have developed astonishing rainforest trekking tour packages. You can see incredible landscapes, hundreds of bird species and rare and endemic fauna and flora. While trekking through waterfalls, crystal clear rivers, ancient burial grounds, you will also be able to see jungle camps, where you will see the original culture.

Sangeang Volcano:

It is an active volcano that emits smoke many times a day. The island is mostly uninhabited, but the villagers from near islands come there daily and garden there on fertile soil. Most of the Captains we know also know a special place ashore where there are natural hot stones lying just below the sandy surface near the beach that are ordered for massage.

Hike Padar Island:

If you are interested in hiking and you want to be rewarded with a good view this will be a paradise for you. The hike will take about 15 – 40 minutes depending on the kind of physical shape you’re in and whether you are hiking in the morning or during the day, where temperatures and humidity are higher. As soon as you will get off the boat, there are two trails we could take to go for a little hike. The views on the top are like nothing comparable. So many different shades of blue and brown covering everything on the horizon. It is amazing to see.

Cunca Waterfall Near Labuan Bajo:

The guide can help you and take you to the waterfalls through the forest and then over a very wobbly bridge. The entrance may seem a little steep but it is amazing when you are there and worth a swim. There are shallow areas as well as some deep ones so good for any level of swimmer. If you are getting tired there are a few sandy spots if you get tired. Everything is also more or less shaded so it is really refreshing and you will not get sunburns.

Dragons of Komodo & Rinca:

Early morning is the best time to go on a nature walk to explore this preserved habitat of the world’s largest lizard – the Komodo dragon. They can weigh up to 160 kilograms and with a total length of over 3 meters. There are park rangers that control everything. There is a growing tendency to forbid visiting the national park and seeing these reptiles for a while so that the animals will have little time for themselves without the tourists.

Satonda Island lake:

It is a tiny volcanic uninhabited island (except for park officials) where you can go ashore on a beach to the view of the large saltwater lake, trees there have great mystical powers. The island is also home for a large colony of fruit bats.

Alor – Ikats:

The place is known the best after weaving ladies of Ternate, that are always on the watch for a potential buyer and uses a small boat to approach the tourists. They weave, sitting for hours, The cotton is spun, they dye everything and the results are beautiful pieces that are always unique.

Moyo Island:

The beautiful home of Amanwana jungle resort of the Aman group, and a couple of small local fishing villages. Be prepared to be greeted by loads of happy and loud school children. There are also additional local waterfalls nearby so you can extend your walk also through the jungle.

Elephant Safari Park with Monkey Forest and Rice terraces:

We will organize a transfer and you will start the trip to Ubud Monkey Forest. This huge wilderness area is home to more than 700 long-tailed macaques and you will be able to see some of these amazing monkeys up-close. After getting friendly with monkeys you will go towards the Taro elephant sanctuary where 31 Sumatran elephants live among the lush botanical gardens and jungle. In the park, you will have the opportunity to touch, feed, and even ride an elephant if you will want and pay for that. You will also not miss the visit of the rice terraces of Tegallalang, where you will learn all about the process of gardening.

Mount Batur Sunrise Trek with Hot Springs and coffee plantations:

You can start this trip on the foothills of Mount Batur, which is the second-highest hill in Bali. The drive will be around 2 hours long and you will arrive at the sacred volcano on the 1717 meters above sea level. You will have to climb a little to reach the peak, where you will see Batur crater and incredible nature around you. You will then return to the valley and complete this trip with the benefits of the thermal waters in the relaxing and natural hot springs.

Meet the Locals:

One of the best things about the whole area where you will be able to cruise is walking through the villages and meeting the people who live there. No matter where you will go the locals are warm and friendly. Almost everyone greets you with their “traditional” “Halo”.Whether it’s luxury hotels set on glittering charcoal-hued volcanic sands or exclusive private villas set amidst rice paddies, temples and waterfalls, Indonesia’s accommodation consistently achieves attention for exceptional service. The outstanding hospitality found in this country is truly a force to be reckoned with and crew on every vessel we promote for Indonesia is superb.

When is the best time to cruise in Indonesia

Indonesia lies in the tropics, and monsoon periods also have a major impact on climate and when it is the most appropriate to cruise, but nevertheless she can be visited throughout the whole year as it is warm all the time. We just need to consider individual microclimates and dry and wet seasons so destinations may vary depending on the time of the year.

Indonesian-areas

Indonesian climate areas

The west of Indonesia (including Bali, Java, Lombok, and Komodo National Park) is generally best visited between May and September. The east (including Raja Ampat, Papua, and the Moluccas) is the best to visit between November and March.

The months of April and October are ideal for cruises in the Anambas region, which is the closest area to Singapore. For groups with more time and with greater adventuring appetites, this period allows them to make and do a longer once-a-year charter trip. During these months, naming lots of vessels and their owners migrates from one region to another, giving groups a chance to experience different regions and explore exceptional combinations of cultures, landscapes, and marine environments.

We can help you find your dream yacht in Indonesia

We know that organizing yacht charter holidays can be tiresome. There are just so many different vessels to choose from in Indonesia! But if you plan the right way if you are a bit adventurous and if classic hotel holidays are not any more your “cup of tea”, then we can be of great assistance.

Frequently asked questions about yachting in Indonesia

Renting a private yacht in Indonesia means you rent the vessel, including crew and all facilities for your tailored vacation experience. Depending on the area a normal charter duration in Indonesia is from 4 to 14 Nights.

Chartering a private yacht in Indonesia gives you and the group the biggest privacy, flexibility, and freedom for your cruise in Indonesia. All the itineraries, activities, daily excursions, menus and everything will be tailored according to your groups’ wishes. Renting a private yacht in Indonesia is also a great idea for weddings, anniversaries, parties, company events and much more.

Similar to other destinations, Indonesia has numerous options for what you can do while cruising between the islands, if you ofcourse want to. You can do Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Surfing, Wakeboarding, Sea Kayaking, Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Fishing, Bird Watching, exploring local villages, caves, restaurants, museums, national parks...

There are no restrictions and all our crews and owners are used to having kids on board. If you consider having very young children with you, just let us know in advance so the route will be tailored according to that to be the easiest to all in the group. Even for older kids we will cooperate with the crew and tailor and provide water toys and organize some activities on land perfect for them.

All the Passports from all the individuals in the group must be valid for at least 6 months from the day of check-in from Indonesia. A lot of clients from different countries receive a free 30-day non-extendable visa upon arrival to Indonesia (Jakarta/Bali). If, however, your country is not included on this list, then arrival to Indonesia costs $ 35 for a one-time renewable tourist visa.

So far we have not experienced any concerns or problems regarding that risk even though the area around Raja Ampat is the area of Malaria Risk. You have to know that yachts in Indonesia are big and they need to moor around 50-150 meters from the shore so in the middle of the water the mosquitos cannot be found. We would still recommend bringing some insect repellant and good clothing for land visits. In case you prefer to take Malaria tablets, keep in mind that there might be some side effects, so check that with your doctor.

All our Indonesian yachts in our fleet are mostly cruising in the calm seas so seasickness in Indonesia cannot be a big problem. Vessels are big, stable and you will actually not even feel that you are on the water. Everything, of course, depends on the route and weather, but in any case, motion sickness tablets are on board and can be taken to ensure your comfort. If you will trust your Captain, he will tailor the route, if needed due to weather conditions to be the best for your group.

Ask our agents about her details, because each vessel is different about that. In most cases Accommodation, Towels and general toiletries, Coffee, tea and drinking water, Food and Snacks, Airport/Hotel transfers, Watersports & Snorkeling equipment, Tanks/weight/Divemasters - are included in the prices. Diving Equipment Rental, Harbour & National Park Fees, Travel and Diving Insurance, Alcohol and Soft Drinks, Crew Gratitude, International and domestic flights, hotel stays before or after your charter - are excluded.

Tips are not mandatory but if you are happy and satisfied with the crew (and we believe you will be) it is common to tip 3-10% of the charter prices to the Captain and then he shares equally among the whole crew. When receiving any service from local people during island visits, you may give some money to appreciate their service, but keep it in mind to their income. Over tipping can create jealousy and inequality. IDR 20.000 – IDR 100.000 per person is sufficient normally depending on the kind of service you received.

The Indonesian Seas are full of life but all the people and government are committed to conserving this highly valuable resource for future generations. So fishing is strictly prohibited in protected areas and national parks and also be careful not to fish and eat endangered species. Ask the crew about the details.
